In addition to wavelength and polarization, coherent light possesses a degree of freedom associated with its spatial topology that, when exploited through nonlinear optics, can unlock a plethora of new photonic phenomena. A prime example involves the use of vortex beams, which allow for the tuning of light's orbital angular momentum (OAM) on demand. Such processes can not only reveal emergent physics but also enable high-density classical and quantum communication paradigms by allowing access to an infinitely large set of orthogonal optical states. Nevertheless, structured nonlinear optics have failed to keep pace with the ever-present need to shrink the length-scale of optoelectronic and photonic technologies to the nanoscale regime. Here, we push the boundaries of vortex nonlinear optics to the ultimate limits of material dimensionality. By exploiting second and third-order nonlinear frequency-mixing processes in van der Waals semiconductor monolayers, we show the free manipulation of the wavelength, topological charge, and radial index of vortex light-fields. We demonstrate that such control can be supported over a broad spectral bandwidth, unconstrained by traditional limits associated with bulk nonlinear optical (NLO) materials, due to the atomically-thin nature of the host crystal. Our work breaks through traditional constraints in optics and promises to herald a new avenue for next-generation optoelectronic and photonics technologies empowered by twisted nanoscale nonlinear light-matter interactions.

Understanding the thermoelastic response of a nanostructure is crucial for the choice of materials and interfaces in electronic devices with improved and tailored transport properties, at the length scales of the present technology. Here we show how the deposition of a $MoS_2$ monolayer can strongly modify the nanoscale thermoelastic dynamics of silicon substrates close to their interface. We achieve this result by creating a transient grating with extreme ultraviolet light, using ultrashort free-electron laser pulses, whose $\approx$84 nm period is comparable to the size of elements typically used in nanodevices, such as electric contacts and nanowires. The thermoelastic response, featured by coherent acoustic waves and an incoherent relaxation, is tangibly modified by the presence of monolayer $MoS_2$. Namely, we observed a major reduction of the amplitude of the surface mode, which is almost suppressed, while the longitudinal mode is basically unperturbed, aside from a faster decay of the acoustic modulations. We interpret this behavior as a selective modification of the surface elasticity and we discuss the conditions to observe such effect, which might be of immediate relevance for the design of Si-based nanoscale devices., Comment: 27 pages, 15 figures

Van der Waals (vdW) structures of two-dimensional materials host a broad range of physical phenomena. New opportunities arise if different functional layers may be remotely modulated or coupled in a device structure. Here we demonstrate the in-situ coherent modulation of moir\'e excitons and correlated Mott insulators in transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) homo- or hetero-bilayers with on-chip terahertz (THz) waves. Using common dual-gated device structures, each consisting of a TMD moir\'e bilayer sandwiched between two few-layer graphene (fl-Gr) gates with hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) spacers, we launch coherent phonon wavepackets at ~0.4-1 THz from the fl-Gr gates by femtosecond laser excitation. The waves travel through the h-BN spacer, arrive at the TMD bilayer with precise timing, and coherently modulate the moir\'e excitons or the Mott states. These results demonstrate that the fl-Gr gates, often used for electrical control of the material properties, can serve as effective on-chip opto-elastic transducers to generate THz waves for the coherent control and vibrational entanglement of functional layers in commonly used moir\'e devices., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, 12 pages SI. arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:2307.16563

Ferroelectricity, a spontaneous and reversible electric polarization, is found in certain classes of van der Waals (vdW) material heterostructures. The discovery of ferroelectricity in twisted vdW layers provides new opportunities to engineer spatially dependent electric and optical properties associated with the configuration of moir\'e superlattice domains and the network of domain walls. Here, we employ near-field infrared nano-imaging and nano-photocurrent measurements to study ferroelectricity in minimally twisted WSe2. The ferroelectric domains are visualized through the imaging of the plasmonic response in a graphene monolayer adjacent to the moir\'e WSe2 bilayers. Specifically, we find that the ferroelectric polarization in moir\'e domains is imprinted on the plasmonic response of the graphene. Complementary nano-photocurrent measurements demonstrate that the optoelectronic properties of graphene are also modulated by the proximal ferroelectric domains. Our approach represents an alternative strategy for studying moir\'e ferroelectricity at native length scales and opens promising prospects for (opto)electronic devices., Comment: 19 pages, 3 figures

The pair density wave (PDW) is a novel superconducting state in which Cooper pairs carry center-of-mass momentum in equilibrium, leading to the breaking of translational symmetry. Experimental evidence for such a state exists in high magnetic field and in some materials that feature density wave orders that explicitly break translational symmetry. However, evidence for a zero-field PDW state that exists independent of other spatially ordered states has so far been elusive. Here, we show that such a state exists in the iron pnictide superconductor EuRbFe4As4 (Eu-1144), a material that features coexisting superconductivity (Tc ~ 37K) and magnetism (Tm ~ 15 K). We show from the Spectroscopic Imaging Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (SI-STM) measurements that the superconducting gap at low temperature has long-range, unidirectional spatial modulations with an incommensurate period of ~8 unit cells. Upon raising the temperature above Tm, the modulated superconductor disappears, but a uniform superconducting gap survives to Tc. When an external magnetic field is applied, gap modulations disappear inside the vortex halo. The SI-STM and bulk measurements show the absence of other density wave orders, showing that the PDW state is a primary, zero-field superconducting state in this compound. Both four-fold rotational symmetry and translation symmetry are recovered above Tm, indicating that the PDW is a smectic order.

Vertical heterostructures (HS) of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) host interlayer excitons (ILX), with electrons and holes residing in different layers. With respect to their intralayer counterparts, ILX feature much longer lifetimes and diffusion lengths, paving the way to excitonic optoelectronic devices operating at room temperature. While the recombination dynamics of ILX has been intensively studied, the formation process and its underlying physical mechanisms are still largely unexplored. Here we use ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy with a white-light probe, spanning both intralayer and interlayer exciton resonances, to simultaneously capture and time-resolve interlayer charge transfer and ILX formation dynamics in a MoSe$_2$/WSe$_2$ HS. We find that the ILX formation timescale is nearly an order of magnitude (~1 ps) longer than the interlayer charge transfer time (~100 fs). Microscopic calculations attribute the relative delay to an interplay between a phonon-assisted interlayer exciton cascade and subsequent cooling processes, and excitonic wave-function overlap. Our results provide an explanation to the efficient photocurrent generation observed in optoelectronic devices based on TMD HS, as the ILX have an opportunity to dissociate during their thermalization process., Comment: 18 pages, 4 figures

Near-field imaging has emerged as a reliable probe of the dielectric function of van der Waals crystals. In principle, analyzing the propagation patterns of subwavelength waveguide modes (WMs) allows for extraction of the full dielectric tensor. Yet previous studies have mostly been restricted to high-symmetry materials or narrowband probing. Here, we resolve in-plane anisotropic WMs in thin rhenium disulfide (ReS2) crystals across a wide range of near-infrared frequencies. By tracing the evolution of these modes as a function of crystallographic direction, polarization of the electric field and sample thickness, we have determined the anisotropic dielectric tensor including the elusive out-of-plane response. The excitonic absorption at ~1.5 eV manifests itself as a clear backbending feature in the WM dispersion and a reduction of the quality factors as fully supported by numerical calculations. Lead halide perovskites (LHPs) have emerged as an excellent class of semiconductors for next-generation solar cells and optoelectronic devices. Tailoring physical properties by fine-tuning the lattice structures has been explored in these materials by chemical composition or morphology. Nevertheless, its dynamic counterpart, phonon-driven ultrafast material control, as contemporarily harnessed for oxide perovskites, has not been established yet. Here we employ intense THz electric fields to obtain direct lattice control via nonlinear excitation of coherent octahedral twist modes in hybrid CH3NH3PbBr3 and all-inorganic CsPbBr3 perovskites. These Raman-active phonons at 0.9 - 1.3 THz are found to govern the ultrafast THz-induced Kerr effect in the low-temperature orthorhombic phase and thus dominate the phonon-modulated polarizability with potential implications for dynamic charge carrier screening beyond the Froehlich polaron. The magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) is a backbone device for spintronics. Realizing next generation energy efficient MTJs will require operating mechanisms beyond the standard means of applying magnetic fields or large electrical currents. Here, we demonstrate a new concept for programmable MTJ operation via strain control of the magnetic states of CrSBr, a layered antiferromagnetic semiconductor used as the tunnel barrier. Switching the CrSBr from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic order generates a giant tunneling magnetoresistance ratio without external magnetic field at temperatures up to ~ 140 K. When the static strain is set near the phase transition, applying small strain pulses leads to active flipping of layer magnetization with controlled layer number and thus magnetoresistance states. Further, finely adjusting the static strain to a critical value turns on stochastic switching between metastable states, with a strain-tunable sigmoidal response curve akin to the stochastic binary neuron. Our results highlight the potential of strain-programmable van der Waals MTJs towards spintronic applications, such as magnetic memory, random number generation, and probabilistic and neuromorphic computing.

The ability to control magnetic properties of materials is crucial for fundamental research and underpins many information technologies. In this context, two-dimensional materials are a particularly exciting platform due to their high degree of tunability and ease of implementation into nanoscale devices. Here we report two approaches for manipulating the A-type antiferromagnetic properties of the layered semiconductor CrSBr through hydrostatic pressure and ligand substitution. Hydrostatic pressure compresses the unit cell, increasing the interlayer exchange energy while lowering the N\'eel temperature. Ligand substitution, realized synthetically through Cl alloying, anisotropically compresses the unit cell and suppresses the Cr-halogen covalency, reducing the magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy and decreasing the N\'eel temperature. A detailed structural analysis combined with first-principles calculations reveal that alterations in the magnetic properties are intricately related to changes in direct Cr-Cr exchange interactions and the Cr-anion superexchange pathways. Further, we demonstrate that Cl alloying enables chemical tuning of the interlayer coupling from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic, which is unique amongst known two-dimensional magnets. The interaction between distinct excitations in solids is of both fundamental interest and technological importance. One example of such interactions is coupling between an exciton, a Coulomb bound electron-hole pair, and a magnon, a collective spin excitation. The recent emergence of van der Waals magnetic semiconductors provides a powerful platform for exploring these exciton-magnon interactions and their fundamental properties, such as strong correlation, as well as their photo-spintronic and quantum transduction applications. Here we demonstrate precise control of coherent exciton-magnon interactions in the layered magnetic semiconductor CrSBr. We show that by controlling the direction of applied magnetic fields relative to the crystal axes, and thus the rotational symmetry of the magnetic system, we can tune not only the exciton coupling to the bright magnon, but also to an optically dark mode via magnon hybridization. The exciton-magnon coupling and associated magnon dispersion curves can be further modulated by applying a uniaxial strain. At the critical strain, a dispersionless dark magnon band emerges. Our results demonstrate unprecedented control of the opto-mechanical-magnonic coupling, and a step towards the predictable and controllable implementation of hybrid quantum magnonics.

The optical properties of transition metal dichalcogenides have previously been modified at the nanoscale by using mechanical and electrical nanostructuring. However, a clear experimental picture relating the local electronic structure with emission properties in such structures has so far been lacking. Here, we use a combination of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and near-field photoluminescence (nano-PL) to probe the electronic and optical properties of single nano-bubbles in bilayer heterostructures of WSe2 on MoSe2. We show from tunneling spectroscopy that there are electronic states deeply localized in the gap at the edge of such bubbles, which are independent of the presence of chemical defects in the layers. We also show a significant change in the local bandgap on the bubble, with a continuous evolution to the edge of the bubble over a length scale of ~20 nm. Nano-PL measurements observe a continuous redshift of the interlayer exciton on entering the bubble, in agreement with the band to band transitions measured by STM. We use self-consistent Schr\"odinger-Poisson (SP) simulations to capture the essence of the experimental results and find that strong doping in the bubble region is a key ingredient to achieving the observed localized states, together with mechanical strain.

In this work, we observe plasmon induced hot electron extraction in a heterojunction between indium tin oxide nanocrystals and monolayer molybdenum disulphide. We study the sample with ultrafast differential transmission exciting the sample at 1750 nm where the intense localized plasmon surface resonance of the indium tin oxide nanocrystals is and where the monolayer molybdenum disulphide does not absorb light. With the excitation at 1750 nm we observe the excitonic features of molybdenum disulphide in the visible range, close to the exciton of molybdenum disulphide. Such phenomenon can be ascribed to a charge transfer between indium tin oxide nanocrystals and monolayer molybdenum disulphide upon plasmon excitation. Transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers and heterostructures are highly tunable material systems that provide excellent models for physical phenomena at the two-dimensional (2D) limit. While most studies to date have focused on electrons and electron-hole pairs, phonons also play essential roles. Here, we apply ultrafast electron diffraction and diffuse scattering to directly quantify, with time and momentum resolution, electron-phonon coupling (EPC) in monolayer molybdenum disulfide (MoS$_{2}$) and phonon transport from the monolayer to a silicon nitride (Si$_3$N$_4$) substrate. Optically generated hot carriers result in a profoundly anisotropic distribution of phonons in the monolayer on the $\sim$ 5 ps time scale. A quantitative comparison with ab-initio ultrafast dynamics simulations reveals the essential role of dielectric screening in weakening EPC. Thermal transport from the monolayer to the substrate occurs with the phonon system far from equilibrium. While screening in 2D is known to strongly affect equilibrium properties, our findings extend this understanding to the dynamic regime.

CrSBr is an air-stable 2D van der Waals semiconducting magnet with great technological promise, but its atomic-scale magnetic interactions -- crucial information for high-frequency switching -- are poorly understood. We present an experimental study to determine the CrSBr magnetic exchange Hamiltonian and bulk magnon spectrum. We confirm the $A$-type antiferromagnetic order using single crystal neutron diffraction. We also measure the magnon dispersions using inelastic neutron scattering and rigorously fit the excitation modes to a spin wave model. The magnon spectrum is well described by an intra-plane ferromagnetic Heisenberg exchange model with seven nearest in-plane exchanges. This fitted exchange Hamiltonian enables theoretical predictions of CrSBr behavior: as one example, we use the fitted Hamiltonian to predict the presence of chiral magnon edge modes with a spin-orbit enhanced CrSBr heterostructure., Comment: 8 pages and 7 figures, plus six figures of supplemental information
